Connaught: A Tertiary Government Referral Hospital in Sierra Leone

Connaught Hospital, a key tertiary government referral hospital in Sierra Leone, is strategically situated in Freetown’s capital city. Renowned for providing extensive medical and surgical services and various other health-related services, it has the largest concentration of specialists and specialized units in the nation, establishing itself as the principal teaching hospital. The facility boasts a capacity of approximately 350 beds, encompassing ten wards (numbered 1-10). It includes additional wards and units like the Annex Ward, the Intensive Care Unit, and the Accident and Emergency Unit, further segmented into Medical Observation, Trauma, and Triage areas.

The hospital is equipped with a Specialist Outpatient Unit, an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department, Radiology, Physiotherapy, an Operating Theater, a Blood Bank, a Laboratory, and departments for Nutrition, HIV & AIDS, Oncology, Neurology, as well as a Mortuary, Dialysis centre, and Maintenance, Laundry, Tailoring, Transport, and Security Units. As part of the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC), Connaught Hospital is the university’s most significant training site.

Annually, the hospital caters to over 50,000 Sierra Leoneans, playing a pivotal role in the clinical training of medical, nursing, and pharmacy students, along with other allied healthcare trainees, encompassing postgraduate education and research. Originally established in the 19th century and officially opened in 1912 by the Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, the hospital was rejuvenated and reopened in 2006 by the then-President of Sierra Leone, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, following the conclusion of the Civil War.
